Elmira's Civil War Story

We will be representing citizens of Elmira and surrounding communities.  

Below you find participation guidelines for ladies, gentlemen and children. In addition, Citizens of the Chemung Valley is a separate Facebook page for accepted applicants where impression specific questions can be discussed and activities planned.

On Friday Jun 23, the Chemung Valley History Museum is offering a hands on artifact study for registered participants. Slots are limited and only paid participants will be placed on the sign up roster. Details will be posted in the Citizens of the Chemung Valley group.

Saturday morning, June 24, for those who wish to step back into time, you will have an opportunity to participate in a 19th C naturalist led walk at the local Nature Center in a relatively anachronism free environment. In the afternoon, you will have time to have time to continue your time travel with a  picnic, either at the Nature Center or riverside. For those that have a boat, there is a boat launch just upriver that would allow for an approximately 30 minute leisurely river paddle down to the event site.

If you prefer, throughout the day Saturday, there will be a series of talks and tours that are also open to the public. Saturday afternoon will be the building dedication and raffle drawings.

Sunday, June 25 after morning services, we will depart for a memorial ceremony at the National Cemetery. making stops in the private section of Woodlawn Cemetery at the Underground Railroad monument and John Jones grave site. The event will close about 1 pm.

You are also encouraged to participate in the Preservation Challenge to help support preservation of local history that reaches far beyond the borders of Chemung County.
